Items Discussed

¥ Chapter Activities – Oralia is back in Austin and is excited about possible chapter activities to promote family literacy and awareness and appreciation of the Hispanic culture. She reported on national plans to be announced soon as part of Camila AlireÕs Library Advocacy Campaign with a Family Literacy Focus. Each ALA ethnic caucus would develop a plan using el D’a de los Ni–os/ D’a de los Libros (D’a). The goal for REFORMA is by March 2010 to have a Noche de Cuentos event that would serve as publicity for D’a in April. At RNC3 (REFORMA National Conference, September 2008 in El Paso) Noche de Cuentos was an especially successful program. All chapters will be encouraged to apply for funding. More plans are forthcoming from National REFORMA soon. Funding for six chapters will be awarded through a competitive grant process for programs that that highlight family literacy using REFORMAÕS theme of Noche de Cuentos. Other programming ideas were discussed and charted through a timeline to better help members decide on programming throughout the year.

¥ Workshops – As a chapter, we recognize the need for more awareness of Hispanic literature and authors. REFORMA could connect with University of Texas librarians to provide workshops for teachers and healthcare professionals. Members could attend workshops free, but there would be a charge for non-members. DonÕs sessions at Austin ISD library workshops have been well attended.

We will also encourage AISD to become an institutional member of REFORMA; that way, copies of the national newsletter could be housed in the districtÕs Library Media Center collection.

We will approach Jennifer Battle of Texas State University about speaking to school librarians at the first CafŽ Literario.

¥ Calendar – Correction: The October 24 meeting will not be held at a library; it will be held at a restaurant. (See below.)

New Business

¥ National REFORMA Membership – Bob reported that he participated in a conference call concerning a proposed automated system for membership in REFORMA where application and payment could be completed online. The system could also handle membership renewals, registration for conferences, and budget reports. National is in the process of requesting proposals at this time.
