G. Thomas Swenson, Jr
G. Thomas Swenson, Jr. G. Thomas Swenson, Jr.
passed away August 25, 2012, at the age of 57. He was born October 11,
1954, to Glen and Patty Swenson in Austin, Texas. He is survived by his
wife, Kayla; his children, Clark, Blake and Stephanie; his brother Bill
and his wife Sandy; their children, Will and Kate; and his aunt, Shirley
Turek.
Tom grew up in Austin. During his formative years he participated in all
manner of athletics and was a highly decorated Boy Scout. He would go on
to graduate from the University of Texas in 1978. While there, he was a
defensive lineman for the football team under Darrell Royal and a member
of the Sigma Nu fraternity. After lettering for the football team in his
senior year, Tom became a lifetime member of the T-Association and was
an ardent supporter of UT football for the remainder of his life.
After moving to Houston, he worked as a petroleum landman for Mobil Oil
and Guardian Oil. In 1981, Tom married Kayla Goodrich. Three years
later, Tom and Kayla moved to Austin where he went to work as a
financial planner for Aetna (now ING), earning numerous industry
accolades early in his career.
His final move came in 1988, when he and his family moved to Denton,
Texas, where they have since resided for the last 24 years. Primarily
through his work with faculty and staff at the University of North Texas
and Texas Woman's University, Tom and his family came to appreciate a
tight knit community of caring individuals in Denton. In addition to his
work with the universities, Tom also participated in a number of other
local institutions, including Denton Country Club, where he was an avid
golfer, and Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, where he was an active
member. Tom liked to say that some of the greatest pleasures he had came
from helping people and solving problems. His success in these areas can
be attested to not only by the many clients he assisted, but also by his
family and the many friends he made throughout his life.
He will be extraordinarily missed by all.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 from 6-8 pm at DeBerry
Funeral Directors. A memorial service will be on Wednesday, August 29,
2012 at 11:00 am at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity .
