Youth gathered to kick off Stomp Out Illiteracy with a parade and rally on Tuesday, July 23, 1996.
¡OYE!,which means "Listen to me" in Spanish, is a multicultural, youth empowerment program created by Gloria Estefan and Sears, Roebuck and Co., in conjunction with Estefan's Evolution Tour'96.
River City Youth and Family Builders is the recipient of a $20,000 grant through ¡OYE! for its"Stomp Out Illiteracy" project. "Stomp Out Illiteracy" was selected by members of the Greater AustinChamber of Commerce's Youth Advisory Council as a way to get youth involved in identifying and addressing the problem of illiteracy.
As part of the proposal, the Estefan Learning Resource Center will be established at 78702 RAYS, which is a collaboration of agencies joined together to provide programs and services for youth and families joined together to provide programs and serices for youth and families living in the 78702 zip code.
