Welcome to Sangati

Mission Statement

We are an informal group of musicians and poets dedicated to performing art in the service of human rights and progressive social change. The issues we address include but are not limited to ending discrimination based on race and caste, and promoting the rights of women and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi and trans) people.

About Us

We give performances for fund-raisers and other public functions for progressive social activist groups at no charge to those groups. Our performances draw mainly on Hindustani, Carnatic, and Persian classical music and on progressive traditions in Indian and Persian poetry, though they may include elements of other traditions. Our group is an independent and democratic organization which makes decisions on a consensual basis.

Sangati was founded in 1999 by a collective that included Vandana Singh, Christopher Chapman, Soniya Brar, Subir Mukherjee, Richa Jain, and L Ramakrishnan.

Some highlights

- Our first performance was for a fundraiser called "Untold" in support of the UT10, a group of University of Texas students who had been arrested while staging a peaceful protest before the University administration.

- In collaboration with Saheli, we presented a 91.7 FM KOOP radio program Unfettered Voices: A tribute to Women's Movements in India on March 8, 2000, 6.30 - 7.00 pm. The program was broadcast on the occasion of International Women's Day, and consisted of poetry, music and narrative celebrating the rich traditions of women's movements, rebellion and social change through history.

In July 2000 we performed at a benefit for CRY (Child Relief and You) organized by the Network of Indian Professionals in Austin.

Individual members of Sangati have been involved in organizing such annual events as Austin's Tyagaraja Aradhana, Guruguhaanjali, and the Rest of the Rainbow, a poetry/performance evening by queers of colour and allies at UT Austin. We have also participated in the Austin International Poetry Festival, choir and concerts in both formal and informal settings.
