Computer engineering is a vast field that includes engineers who write application software, low level software that controls computer hardware, and design computer hardware. Computer engineers delve deeper into the electronic workings of the computer hardware and devices. They design computer interfaces, hardware, and controlling devices for computer components New fields of computer engineering are robotics and virtual reality systems. Advances such as Java and the internet will create a huge demand for these engineers as more businessess will make computers an essential part of their business and will need software and hardware. This field is changing so rapidly that the need increases yearly for more computer and software engineers either willing to work directly with hardware or with software development experience.

A degree in computer engineering can either be software engineering related or hardware design related. The hardware design degrees are usually out of the electrical engineering colleges while the software engineering degrees are in the computer science college although this may vary from school to school. In college, students will study:

  • software engineering concepts
  • computer graphics
  • computer system design
  • robotics
  • computer networking
  • databases
