SWE SWT History

How SWE Southwest Texas Section was started....

In the 70s there was one SWE section for the whole state of Texas. The officers alternated between Dallas and Houston. Anna Salguero attended weekend meetings in Houston, while she worked and lived in San Antonio. In 1976 considerations were given to splitting the large Texas Section into smaller ones. Since Anna was the only member attending meetings from the central Texas area, naturally she was chosen to determine if there was interest for a separate section in the area. An initial meeting turned out well and then alternate meetings between Austin and San Antonio took place. When it looked like the section would be solid, the Charter was submitted in 1978. At the same time the Houston Area and Dallas/Ft. Worth submitted theirs. The Texas Section was then split into three sections in 1979. We received our official charter at the '79 Convention in San Francisco. We were initially referring to ourselves as the San Antonio/Austin Section, however, we chose "Southwest Texas" since our boundaries reach all the way to Brownsville!

The Southwest Texas Section is classified as a medium SWE section based on the number of members. Because the Section encompasses such as large geographical area it is difficult for all members to attend meetings, but even for distant members opportunities exist to be involved either on a local, regional or national level.
