Benefits of being a SWE member
With a continuing development program of networking events and speakers, SWE provides opportunities to network with other women engineers
and gain knowledge both professionally and technically. With the satisfaction of introducing students to the world of engineering, SWE provides
a breadth of community volunteer opportunities to motivate students in math and science as well as mentor women engineering students at local
universities.
SWE has many opportunities to take on leadership positions both locally and nationally in a supportive environment. SWE leaders gain new skills
to use in their workplace as well personal satisfaction of operating a successful organization.
Most important are the members of SWE. Members vary from women (and some men) that work in a diverse mix of engineering disciplines
including business owners, senior engineers and recent college graduates. The value of being a member in SWE are the members you meet
both locally and nationally in a national organization that just celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000.
Come join SWE or just attend some of our meetings and see the value of being a member in this accomplished organization!
- Building Skills in your career: There are opportunities to
plan meetings and career guidance events. If you present a paper at
the National Conference, you will gain visibility for yourself and
your company. Being active in a professional organization can show
your manager that you have the initiative to take on more responsibility.
- Experience of other members: Meeting women from other companies
and even reading about the careers of successful members in the SWE
Magazine can provide you with role-models. within our section, you can
receive advice and even first-hand testimony on issues like getting
promoted, sexual harassment, etc.
- Networking: SWE offers many opportunities for gaining contacts
at large and small companies. When you consider all the mergers, spin-offs,
and divestitures that have occurred in the past few years, a network is
a necessity.
- Effect on your career: A positive one when you need to make a
career change. Besides our local section, there are nationwide resources to
help your job search. Send in your information to the SWE resume database. The annual Career Fair at
the National convention is another great place to find a job.
- Fun: Every month it's fun to get together with SWE friends, but
some meetings are planned for more socializing such as our
holiday socials.
- Community: The SWE Southwest Texas section plans activities
throughout
the year that benefit the community. Our holiday socials support the local
organization SafePlace. We host a
Girl Scouts workshop in the Spring for the girl scouts to earn an engineering
badge.
- Information: Our speaker meetings are designed to inform.
Topics are chosen from member suggestions. New ideas and speakers are always
welcome.
- Time For yourself: Don't you deserve a night out every once in a while?
At our meetings, you can converse with a peer group that is hard to find at
work or in the neighborhood.
- Support: As women engineers we can feel isolated in the workplace.
SWE gives you feeling of belonging, with members to reassure you that you can
survive the sports and car talk.
