PROCEDURES

1. Getting Started

  a. Two buoys are placed some distance apart.
They are attached with a SWIM LINE that runs between them
The SWIM LINE should be about 1-2 feet off the bottom and taught
Usually this is placed by boat but other methods may be considered
  b. The ANCHOR and POINT descend first with the SWEEP LINE
The SWEEP LINE should be segmented so that it can go around Obstructions
  c. The ANCHOR attaches the SWEEP LINE to the SWIM LINE
  d. The POINT swims out in a direction perpendicular to the SWIM LINE
The POINT pays out the SWEEP LINE and swims out in a direction
perpendicular to the SWIM LINE a distance determined by the number of
     SWEEP divers and Visibility. (10' Vis x (1 + 4 SWEEP Divers) = 50')
  e. The ANCHOR then signals the first SWEEP Diver to take his position
     on the SWEEP LINE.
  f. The SWEEP diver swims out to the POINT diver
then comes back a few feet depending on visibility
  g. When all SWEEPs are on the SWEEP Line the ANCHOR signals the POINT
to start the pattern (TWO PULLS from ANCHOR to POINT).
  h. ANCHOR confirms (TWO PULLS from POINT to ANCHOR) and starts pattern.

  * This search takes time to set up and care should be taken to stay coordinated
  * Care must be taken by all divers to stay off the bottom to avoid stirring up silt
Even if vis is bad it can probably get worse with more silt in the water.
  * If SWEEP divers descend together with the POINT and ANCHOR they should take up a
Holding pattern on the descent line until the ANCHOR signals them to take their
    position on the SWEEP LINE.
  * Do not rest or push on the diver below. Leave a space cushion at all times.

2. EXECUTING SEARCH

  a. The ANCHOR and the POINT keep the SWEEP LINE perpendicular to the
SWIM LINE and moving slowly in a direction parallel to the SWIM LINE.
  b. The SWEEP DIVERS slowly methodically swim back and forth between the adjacent
     divers searching the area below.

3. MAKE THE TURN AT THE SECOND BUOY

  a. When the ANCHOR reaches the second buoy he holds his end of the SWEEP Line
stationary causing it to arch around the second buoy.
  b. The ANCHOR May need to stop the line to adjust the connection
between the SWEEP and SWIM LINES.
  c. When the SWEEP LINE is again perpendicular to the SWIM LINE the ANCHOR and POINT
again manage the SWEEP LINE so to keep it perpendicular and moving slowly in a
parallel direction opposite to original direction.

4. ENDING THE SEARCH

  a. When the first buoy is reached the ANCHOR makes another turn with the SWEEP LINE
  b. When SWEEP LINE reaches the original starting position the ANCHOR Signals to end
     the dive (FOUR PULLS).
  c. The SWEEP divers swim back towards the ANCHOR leaving space between them.
  d. The ANCHOR Stays put and directs the SWEEP Divers up the Ascent Line.
  e. The POINT rolls up the SWEEP Line following the last SWEEP diver.
  f. When the POINT diver meets the ANCHOR they disconnect the SWEEP LINE
from the SWIM LINE and ascend.
  g. The two buoys and the SWIM LINE are then recovered from the surface.
  • IF AN OBSTRUCTION IS ENCOUNTERED
  a. The person finding the obstruction signals the other divers to STOP (THREE PULLS).
  b. If a SWEEP Diver found the obstruction he swims to the nearest shackel,
disconnects it, moves the line around the obstruction, and reconnects it.
  * it might be a good idea to find the adjacent diver and have him hold the
     disconnected Line.
  c. If the ANCHOR finds the obstruction he may disconnect the SWEEP LINE
from the SWIM LINE to clear it.
  d. If the POINT find the obstruction it is not necessary to disconnect
     SWEEP LINE.
  e. Once the Obstruction is clear the Diver who cleared the obstruction sends the
OKAY signal both directions (ONE PULL)
  • IF THE TARGET IS FOUND
  a. The diver who finds the target signals the other divers with the TARGET FOUND
     signal (FIVE PULLS both directions).
  b. POINT Diver swims in toward ANCHOR
Leaving SWEEP REEL with first OUTSIDE SWEEP DIVER.
  c. POINT Diver finds Diver who signalled TARGET FOUND and VERIFIES TARGET.
  * if TARGET Not VERIFIED he returns to his position and restarts the SWEEP
d If VERIFIED the POINT signals other divers
to end the dive (FOUR PULLS both directions)
  e. The OTHER SWEEP DIVERS Swim down the SWEEP LINE to the SWIM LINE,
Down the SWIM LINE to the Ascent Line, and Ascend to the surface and exit.
  * The Outside SWEEP hands reel to POINT as he passes.
  f. A Pelican Buoy may be deployed or some other position marker may be left behind
  g. The POINT and SWEEP diver then swim back to the ANCHOR, as the POINT Diver
continues to reel up the SWEEP LINE.
  h. When they reach the ANCHOR all three swim down the SWIM LINE to the ascent line
     and exit the water.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

  • ANCHOR
- JOB:
  1. First diver down the anchor line.
  2. Trim negative. You have to hold the search line against strong pull from the POINT.
  3. Locate the SWIM LINE, connect it to the SWEEP LINE.
  4. Mark compass heading when POINT deploys the search line.
  5. Directs SWEEP Divers onto and off of the SWEEP, SWIM, and Ascent Lines.
  6. Hold search line taught during the search.
  7. STARTS, STOPS, and ENDS the PATTERN if Target not found.
- SIGNALS:
  1. Exchange visual "OK" with POINT: Send/Receive ONE PULL.
  2. START THE PATTERN: Send TWO PULLS (START).
  3. STOP THE PATTERN: Send THREE PULLS (STOP).
  4. END THE PATTER: Send FOUR PULLS (END).
  • POINT
- JOB:
  1. Takes the SWEEP LINE down and Pays it out or Takes it up as necessary.
  2. Works with ANCHOR to keep SWEEP LINE taught and perpendicular to the SWIM LINE,
and moving slowly in a direction parallel to the SWIM LINE
  3. Roll up the SWEEP LINE when the pattern finishes. Bring the SWEEP LINE up.
  *  TARGET FOUND

  4. END THE PATTER: Send/Receive FOUR PULLS (END).
  5. FOUND TARGET: Send/Receive FIVE PULLS (FOUND TARGET).
  • SWEEP
- JOB:
  1. Descend the anchor line in order from OUTSIDE SWEEP toward INSIDE SWEEP Position.
  2. Swim OUT to the next diver out from your position.
Then swim back IN to the INSIDE of your sweep area.
