Missouri Canoe Trip
August 2-9, 2002

The Missouri Canoe Trip was a week long canoe trip down the Current River.  We spent 3 days driving, and 5 days on the water, canoeing 85 miles.  We had 20 scouts and 12 adults.

We spent the 1st day and a half driving to Missouri, staying in a church in Texarkana to sleep.  We slept in a campsite the day before we started, our last time sleeping in an actual campsite.  Most of the first day we had none of our gear, and spent a lot of time on a service project cleaning up the river, diving to the bottom to pick up aluminum cans and stopping by the side of the river to pick up trash.  We held a church service beside a large spring, near the ruins of a 19th century hospital.  That afternoon we picked up all our gear, including our food for the week, and started out.  The next four days we slept on sandbars and had little contact with the outside world.  We canoed an average of about 20 miles a day, waking up about 6:30 and setting up camp each afternoon about 5:30.  We explored caves, jumped off boulders and the side of the bank into the river, and in the canoes went over small rapids, and got stuck on sandbars.  The weather was ideal too, except for rain one day while canoeing and another while setting up camp.  The water was cold, especially near springs, but was refreshing under the hot sun.  A few scouts fished, while their dads paddled.  It was a great experience, but all were happy when we all got back in our vans, and relax while we drove home.
