Alaska businessman Joe C. Ashlock, 88, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012 in his Anchorage home surrounded by Patty, his wife of 63 years, and his family. Joe was born in Okmulgee, OK. He was raised in Tulsa and graduated from Central High School in 1943. Joe served in the US Army as a PFC during WWII, and he saw action throughout the Pacific. He attended College on the GI Bill at Tulsa University, where he met his future wife Patty Burtner. After three dates, he proposed, and they were married in 1949. Joe worked for many years in the pipe-coating industry, where he developed numerous inventions and patents including an extrusion coating process. Many of the patents are still in use. He came to Anchorage in the late sixties and owned Surfcote, the company that coated the Alaskan pipeline. During the project his company was the second largest employer in the state, exceeded only by the federal government. After the pipeline was completed, he and his wife were responsible for developing Dimond Center, which they owned and operated throughout his life. The ice skating rink in the center was nicknamed “Patty’s Pond” in honor of Joe’s wife, and together they made numerous contributions to the community. He also had a life-long interest in boating and flying. Joe is survived by his wife Patty, Five children, Laura Ashlock, Sarah Hernandez, Gene Ashlock, Carol Ashlock and Hugh Ashlock; their spouses, Kathy, Elizabeth and Jose; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three nephews and two nieces; an aunt, Bonnie Lowrey and many cousins.

A memorial service was held at the Dimond Athletic Club in Anchorage, Thursday, June 21. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the Hayhurst Funeral Home Chapel in Broken Arrow. Visitation is June 29 at Hayhurst Funeral Home, Broken Arrow.  In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the YMCA of Anchorage, Alaska.
