| As the environmental caucus of
the Democratic Party, we can recruit, support or oppose candidates
based on their environmental standards. We are preparing and promoting
local, state, and national legislation to protect the environment.
We are working to:
• End this states' policy of letting big
industry pollute, making air quality in parts of Texas among the
worst in the nation.
• Provide adequate funding for conservation
programs to ease the strain that population growth and urban sprawl
have put on wildlife habitat, water resources, and park land.
• Eliminate the chance of out-of-state radioactive
waste being dumped in West Texas.
• Create a state gas-guzzler tax for Texans
who want to drive vehicles that pollute the air and waste natural
resources.
Since we organized, the Texas Environmental Democrats
have worked to get the word to government leaders that Texans
demand that their natural resources be preserved.
We have done grassroots lobbying at the Texas
State Capitol against grandfathered industrial power plants.
We sent questionnaires to state legislative candidates
to determine their stand on issues affecting the environment
Our Austin members hosted an awards dinner to
honor that area's environmentally friendly legislators and senator.
