What is Don't Wait Vaccinate?

As of May 2009, the Austin Independent School District identified 10,000 students who have not been immunized or need to complete their immunizations. Without complete immunizations those identified will not be able to enroll this fall in public school. The Don't Wait Vaccinate program is the combined effort of several city, state and healthcare organizations to provide free or low-cost immunizations to those children and their siblings.

Reason for the high number of students needing their immunization records updated is the new rules for school immunizations requirements by the Department of State Health Services, mandating new vaccinations that will primarily affect kindergarten and seventh grade students. The changes are based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The Department of State Health Services mandates that student immunization records must be up-to-date before a child can attend classes.

Parents of students who need immunizations will receive a notice from their school. Any student needing an immunization must have it completed and documentation submitted to the Student Health services office where he/she attends school before the first day of class on Monday, August 24, 2009. Parents are encouraged to contact their health care provider or a community health care provider to arrange for their child to get the necessary immunizations.

New Requirements

The following will be added to current immunization requirements:

Kindergarten

• 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
• 2 doses of Varicella, if the student has not had the chickenpox disease
• 2 doses of Hepatitis A

7th Grade

• 1 Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) booster, if it has been 5 years since the last tetanus-containing vaccine
• 2 doses of Varicella, if the student has not had the chickenpox disease
• 1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine

8th -12th Grades

• 1 Tdap booster, if it has been 10 years since the last tetanus-containing vaccine

Phase In Schedule For Other Grades

• MMR - Begins with Kindergarten in school year 2009 - 2010 and ends with 12th grade in 2021 - 2022
• Varicella - Begins with Kindergarten and 7th grade in school year 2009 - 2010, with all grades required by 2015 2016
• Hepatitis A - Begins with Kindergarten in school year 2009 - 2010 and ends with 12th grade in 2021 - 2022
