Exploring Austin State School Volunteer Opportunities

Austin State School is a residential training center for adults with mental retardation, situated at West 35th Street and Mo-Pac. The individuals who reside and train there have multiple disabilities or severe developmental disabilities.

Volunteers can help increase residents' social skills and self-esteem. Some volunteers assist in raising funds to benefit the residents' recreation fund. We need volunteers for:

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES ASST.--to offer residential staff assistance in accompanying multiply disabled persons on walks or on outings to local festivals, performance or sports programs, parks, movies or stores.
TIME: Two-three times monthly, evenings or weekend days to be arranged, 2-4 hours.

SEASONAL PARTY SPONSOR (2-6 people together) -- to host a party at a home or work center, for a holiday or other celebration. Sponsors provide refreshments, music (and, if for Christmas, gifts are to be included).
TIME: 1-2 hours, occasional. Evenings or weekend days are appropriate times.

SPECIAL EVENTS --to assist in occasional fund-raising/publicity events or volunteer and employee appreciation parties.
TIME: As needed usually for 3-4 hours on an evening or weekend.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES COUNCIL --a non-profit advocacy group for the facility identifies special projects which will contribute to the quality of life for residents of the facility. Among its accomplishments are a chapel, an indoor pool and a hospitality house for visiting families. Membership on the council involves working with facility employees and clients to identify areas of need, and organizing fund-raising activities.
TIME: Varies.

VOLUNTEERS receive one-half hour orientation, or longer depending upon the volunteer assignments. Call 371-6048 weekdays for more information on volunteering or making donations.
