A Note from the Director
Fall, 1999

The Liberal Arts Academy Magnet offers a distinct curriculum in a specialized classroom atmosphere. Like many well-known liberal arts colleges, the LAA is a small, student-centered community that fosters the wide reading, polished writing, and mature reasoning appropriate for gifted and talented students. The Liberal Arts Academy goes beyond secondary honors standards--selecting advanced texts and addressing challenging ideas in history and literature, in politics and culture, in art and philosophy. Students must think and respond beyond the mere conquest of textbook material, read and research on a college level, and organize long range projects. Because LAA students also study the sciences, mathematics, and the arts, they are qualified to meet even the most rigorous college admission criteria. LAA graduates have a history of being accepted at multiple universities, often with financial aid. To this end, the Academy supplies college level books and original classroom materials for a series of courses designed specifically for the magnet students. Study trips and academic counseling supplement packed days in the company of peers with high verbal and reasoning ability.

The atmosphere and the educational climate can best be appreciated by visiting the campus and classes. This website contains course descriptions and details of Academy life. In addition, there are sample application forms and guidelines for visiting. We look at several sources of information about the talents and interests of each applicant, including records of previous performance, a completed written application, and an on-site interview with written components. Please read further to investigate your magnet option.
