THE LAA CORE EXPERIENCEThe typical LAA graduation plan calls for double the number of honors courses required by the state's highest graduation plan, and at least five credits beyond the norm for college admissions. Academy faculty write our own curriculum for English, and social studies, and a host of electives; we select our own texts and purchase our own books. From the first day of ninth grade, Academy students practice the kinds of reading and writing that will be required of them by colleges. Instruction emphasizes the production of polished, sophisticated writing.The 4-year experience is designed to prepare students for college on many levels. Computers are available in Academy classrooms. Readings are multicultural and well beyond grade level. Every student in the Academy makes a commitment to study foreign language every year, preferably progressing in one language up to the fourth or fifth year level and AP (Advanced Placement) preparation. Some students choose to study a second foreign language as an elective. As science and math are essential parts of a liberal arts education, Academy students are urged to follow an accelerated sequence in these subjects, preferably in honors courses. Student Quotes |
